Introduction

Smartwatches are now becoming an important part of our lives just like smartphones these days. Some might think it to be an additional expense as smartphone does the job pretty well for them already but just when the technology advances and new gadgets are introduced to us we start realising the need of the new gadget introduced to us because it was made with the mindset of the lack of any comfort that we might be having with carrying a smartphone everywhere we go, may it be a gym or while going for for a walk or jog or doing any exercise. It is very uncomfortable to keep your smartphone with you while you are working out and also due to some or the other reason you just cannot put the phone back home.

This is where the Apple Watch Series 6 comes to the rescue, that is ok if you don’t carry your phone with you, thanks to its cellular feature in it. With this feature, you won’t miss a call, notification or a message and also you can make calls through the Apple Watch Series 6 (GPS + Cellular) itself. If you want to hear music, still you don’t need your phone and you can hear from music to podcasts just with the help of this smartwatch.

Also a smartwatch is capable of doing many things which your smartphone might not be able to do, like tracking your heart rate, your activity, sleep and overall fitness in that matter. Moreover, you can also check your blood oxygen level which is very much needed in this time of pandemic with this Apple Watch Series 6 smartwatch.

The Apple Watch Series 6 comes in two variants GPS & GPS+Cellular and it was launched in September 2020 and we are using this GPS+Cellular variant for around a year now. Design

There is nothing much new with the design of the watch. It is the usual squarish design with rounded corners. It looks more or less identical to the Apple Watch Series 5. It would be hard to differentiate the Series 6 if kept besides Series 5 from the case color and band. The Apple Watch Series 6 comes in two sizes: 40mm and 44mm.

The built quality of the watch is amazing. The right side of the watch has the digital crown and a single button below it. There’s a cutout for the speaker on the left side, and the health sensors are at the back of the case.

The watch we have here is the Apple Watch Series 6 (GPS + Cellular) – Gold Aluminium Case with Pink Sand Sport Band. The Sport Band is made from fluoroelastomer and it is fastened with a pin and tuck closure. It is very comfortable and also dries quickly. The 40mm model has a 1.57 inch display with 394 by 324 pixels, while the 44mm Series 6 has a 1.73 inch display with 448 by 368 pixels. The 40mm and 44mm aluminum models weigh 30.33 grams and 36.28 grams, respectively, without the strap, while the stainless steel models are heavier than this.

Software & Performance

The Apple Watch Series 6 works only with an iPhone, so you’ll need an iPhone 6s or above model which is running iOS 14. From this model onward, we will be getting the magnetic charging cable in the box but not the adapter. If you are getting the watch with LTE then you will need a plan from your supported carrier. We get a speedy and lag-free experience with the watchOS 7. We get a smooth touch response and haptic feedback for incoming calls, alarms and reminders from apps, they are good and unobstructive.

On pressing the crown, you will be navigated to the app list in the watch and when you rotate the crown you can navigate to various menus and also can perform zoom in/out. You can also wake Siri up with a simple command through the watch itself. Talking about the Apple Watch Series 6’s new feature, measuring the Blood Oxygen Level, which could be a very useful feature in these tough times, but sadly, this cannot replace the Pulse Oximeter. For more accurate results this is not a go to option for sure. When I tried to measure my Blood Oxygen Levels being very much healthy, many times it happened that my readings by the watch went below 94 which shouldn’t have been the case for a healthy person, being said this many times this also read it correctly. Also, if you are someone wearing the watch all day and night long, this watch will also keep measuring your Blood Oxygen Levels time to time throughout the time, so you need not keep a record of it and remind yourselves about it.

Another and surely a very useful feature provided by this new Apple Watch Series 6 with watchOS 7 is the hand wash tracking feature. When you are washing your hands wearing the watch, it will automatically start a 20 seconds timer for you and this proved to be a very accurate feature as it starts every time I wash my hands and this helped me actually in washing my hands properly for 20 seconds. The Health App will also be keeping a track of this and will show us the average time taken for us to wash our hands in a day so that we can improve ourselves on that if we are not doing it for that particular time already.

It will automatically log activities such as walking, cycling, running, etc, and you can set goals and begin workouts manually in the dedicated watch app. The fitness stats are always quite accurate. The best feature I like in the Apple Watch Series 6 has to be that it is Cellular. I personally hated carrying my phone when I went out for a run, walk or gym and also just many other times but also felt important that I can at least make calls or listen to music or just can send a message and there it was in this watch, my favourite feature of all. Talking about it’s performance, it is very decent, subject to your network connectivity. Whenever you are away from your phone or not connected to the Wi-Fi, the watch will automatically be connected to your esim or the 4G network. Obviously you will need to set it up for it to work prior. Well the speakers of the watch are not that loud while the microphone is pretty good, I would suggest to take your airpods along with you if you wish to talk on phone or listen to music. You can also operate your phone camera with an in-built camera software in this watch itself.

Battery

Apple claims that the battery life for Apple Watch Series 6 to be for 18 hours on one full charge, so nothing much has changed in this section. But being said that, the Apple Watch Series 6 charges quicker than the older Apple Watch Series 5. One thing I observed is that this time, the full charge lasts longer than what Apple claims, which is very surprising.

Apple has also stopped giving the power brick from this model onward but we still do get the magnetic charging cable.

Apple says that the Series 6 can be charged to 80 percent in about one hour and can receive a full charge in about 1.5 hours but my experience is that it charges to 70 percent in an hour which is also pretty decent.

Network & Call Quality

Whenever you are away from your phone and when you are not connected to the Wi-Fi, the Apple Watch Series 6 will fall back on it’s eSIM for the 4G connection which you would have set up. The LTE performance is really good and reliable, I usually don’t carry my phone when I go for a run or to the gym and also many times when I am out for groceries or for a ride. It is so convenient that I leave my phone back home intentionally many times. It’s always good to have your Airpods with you when you decide to keep your phone back home for music and phone calls as the speakers of the watch aren’t very loud when you’re using it outdoors. The experience of the calls and everything depends on your network connection, so the experience may vary according to the network you are using. Currently this works with Jio (Postpaid + Prepaid), Vodafone India (Postpaid + Prepaid) and Airtel (Only Postpaid connection).

Conclusion

As they say, a fitness experience for everyone, powered by Apple Watch is no less than a truth. Well this was my first smartwatch experience and Apple has set a very high standard for me already. Previously I was skeptical that this would be just one more additional device to put on charge and eventually it would just stay unused somewhere in the corner of the house, but to my surprise this is something which is a part of my daily lifestyle now. It is so convenient that the charging part is all worth it and doesn’t feel like a burden at all.

It feels very convenient to not carry your phone to the places you might not be able to handle it and still you can attend your important calls and messages and listen to the music. It is such a wonderful package in one watch. Though one thing I feel missing in this watch for us Indian users is that the Payment Apps are not supported in this watch so if I am out and I want to do any digital payments I cannot do it. I am waiting for Apple Pay to be launched in India and then I’ll be more happy with this watch.

Like anything else, this watch comes with some cons too. Well this only works with an iPhone, so to have this one must be an iPhone user first. Also the blood oxygen data is not very useful in this watch. Also yes, this watch comes with a price, it’s a bit expensive too.

Well in spite of the said cons, I am still very happy with my purchase and it’s a big thumbs up from my side to the Apple Watch Series 6.

So guys this was it with our review on using the Apple Watch Series 6 for around 10 months now and if you are someone thinking of buying this smartwatch then you can definitely go for it.
